basic etiquette: WEDDING GUESTDo I have to say it? Anything that even hints at competing with the bride is a no-no. This means no white. Black, on the other hand, is perfectly acceptable, whether the nuptials take place at dusk or dawn. Caveat: Different cultures have different traditions. If you are attending an ethnic or non-traditional wedding, be sure to do a little research before choosing your outfit. |

Remember, this is a festive occasion, so dress up. At a wedding, you're part of the décor. You're there to make the wedding everything the bride ever dreamed of, so do her a favor and don't under-dress.
Now, this is important: If you wear shoes dyed to match your dress, you're going to look like you lost the bridesmaid's party somewhere - even if you're wearing a different color. So don't.
A pretty dress, complementing shoes and well-chosen jewelry are all you need to look appropriate by day. Save the heavy artillery - heaping diamond necklaces, if you must, cocktail rings and ice-cube earrings -- for evening. And, keep in mind, no matter the time of day, weddings seem to call for a small handbag.
If you choose to wear a suit, there are rules here, too. While I have nothing against pantsuits, a skirt suit is more appropriate and will take you seamlessly from church to reception.
When it comes to dressing for a wedding, it may appear that men have it easy: rent a tux and call it a day. Well, call it a bad day, then. The offerings at many rental stores look like something you wore to your prom. Shouldn't that tell you everything?

| Weddings are festive occasions. Choose something fun but dressed up like this look from Ashton Hall. |
| There are alternatives, however. First, check out your own closet. You probably own a nice dark suit. Dress it up with a subtly textured white shirt, a beautiful silk tie. Even try a bow tie or add a foulard as a pocket square. Another option is a velvet blazer, in black or navy, over dark pants. Add a bow tie and you are ready for any formal event.
This is not to say a tuxedo is out of the question. If you do go that route, though, shop carefully and thoroughly. Whether searching for a tux or a suit, look for wool or a wool blend. Avoid polyester and other synthetics, and remember, ruffled shirts under tuxedos or suit jackets are cool for twenty-somethings or younger. Mature men should avoid them.

Men have choices, too: A black velvet blazer by Michael Kors adds a bit of luxe as does this creative twist on the traditional tux by Mathew Cashe |
