Don't ignore the Microsoft Surface RT!

Most hardare hackers like myself wait till the bottle of wine or computer technology has matured to "test it." This time in 2015 I snatched a 64 gig Surface RT for fraction of its original cost with all of the functionality and hype when it was introduced by M-Soft several years ago as its response to the iPad. The first answer is that the Surface RT, and in a moment I'll explain what an RT is; does this Surface do what a 2015 tablet does. The answer is a resounding yes at a fraction of the price. RT is short for "run time," and it evolved when M-Soft made Win 3.0 and allowed run-time versions that were dedicated to specific application or games. In this instance the Surface RT uses an atom-based processor which is often incompatible with intel-based processors. This means that apps made for a tablet using the full version of Win 8.0 to 10.0 will often not work on an atom-bred tablet. The short answer is that the atom processor is slower than the intel processor in mips. Let's use the macbook or air book to the iPad , the former uses Yosemite and the later the latest IOS. iPad apps generally are incompatible with the former. So what good is the Surface 8 RT that may be upgraded to an 8.1 RT? Everything; because IE for the Surface RT may access any application and run it without regard or a specialized app. All printers that work with the full version of 8.0/8.1 will work with 8.0/8.1 RT The display us remarkable and if you ignore the nonsense about 8.0 and become more familiar with it you will actually like it and stop tossing darts at Steve Blamer's picture. The Surface RT has one small annoying flaw. The idea of a 12 volt power supply with a weird mag connector that often falls off is foolish, but getting the most inexpensive dedicated i.e. M-Soft branded keyboard that includes a touchpad is necessary. The keyboard shows remarkable engineering and snaps in place even when blind-folded. Unlike the poor design of the mag connector power supply, the keyboard is excellent. One thing, make sure that you get a Surface RT with the power supply because the quality of non-OEM ones vary too much to the negative. I think you will find the Surface RT to be an excellent tablet, and a remarkable value on Ebay. Of course always look for M-Soft updates for the OS. Have fun!

    Surface Rt, underrated and misunderstood.

The Surface Rt is amazing. It does EVERYTHING I need it to do, and then some. But do your own research to know what you're getting. Know what the RT OS really is. For me, I knew what I was getting, and I love this unit. I've seen people give it negative reviews because they can't game on it. Well, this isn't really meant for gaming, just like a gaming laptop isn't really made for portability, compared to this. As for apps, again, do your research and know what you're getting. I'm not much of a app person, so even though Windows isn't great with apps in there store, they have MOST apps, and the one's they don't, I just use the browser. Again, for me, no big deal. So if you're all about apps, maybe look into something else. But for me, it covers all I need. The build on the RT is great, very premium. Remember, these we're $500+ at launch, so the build is awesome. It feels tough, and nice to hold. Though resolution isn't full HD, it's still excellent and I love watching movies on the 10.6 display. Color's are nice and vivid, and overall, I'd say I'm quite satisfied with the display. Overall, I really love my RT. I own a Surface Pro, and wanted something for travel, and I got that with the RT. I got mine as a bundle with touch keyboard, complete with box, hardly used, not a single scratch on it! I swear it was brand new. And with free shipping, it was a no brainier. Again, be sure you know what you're getting with the RT operating system before you buy. Essentially, you can only install something on this only if it's available in the Windows store, that's it. This is not a full blown operating system. But again, for me, it's more than I need, and the excellent build and quality of the RT certainly makes up for it's minor short comings. In conclusion, if you want a full blown operating system with a full HD display, definitely go with a Surface Pro. However, if you want the little brother version of the Pro, with some short comings, that'll save you hundreds, go with the RT. As mentioned before, I got mine in mint condition, (9.8/10), literally, the seal was broken, screen protector was installed, and looked unused, came complete with touch keyboard and extra micro SD card, for under $80. No complaints what so ever!

    Workhorse

This Surface tablet is solidly built, with a slim, detachable, magnetized keyboard. The tablet is fairly intuitive and boots up right away. One thing about the keyboard, though, is that it is very light relative to the tablet itself, so if you are walking around the room, it's awkward to balance. I would recommend attaching the keyboard for when you have the unit sitting upright on a desk. but if you're lounging around, then you're better off detaching it and using the onscreen one, which is excellent. A click of the address bar will display your regularly visited sites and also your most recent pages. The device's five-contact-point magnetized charger seems a bit puzzling in that you have to make sure you align it properly and that the little blue light is on before it will charge. Software wise, you still are not going to get all the apps you can with Android and Apple. But the tablet apps do seem more numerous than what you can get through Windows on a smartphone. Also, you have no other browser option on the RT beyond Internet Explorer; you can't download Chrome. You also can't upgrade to Windows 10, and by extension, the new Microsoft Edge browser. Despite some of these drawbacks, this is a solid machine, and I think of it more as a laptop than a tablet. For what I believe most people want a tablet for: email, videos and apps, the RT delivers and seems like it is built to last a long time.

    exceeded my expectations

I am a bit of a tech guy, just don't need to spend a fortune to be on point. This is as good as out of the box. Mine didn't even have a scratch. Eventually I would like to buy the $2000 version, but if you just want a great tablet and don't plan to run a company off it buy it now. No complaints at all I will recommend this to friends. Just an FYI I hate Apple products not because of quality, just restriction. This actually functions like a computer, but isn't as high quality as an iPad if that is what you are into. For me I would take this over an iPad and I actually did.

Downloading apps are a potential issue

Great product all in all. Fast and super easy to use. The apps you can download are limited to Microsoft apps (there are not many). Would not let me download apps at first. It claimed my internet was too slow, which it definitely was not. Did a factory reset and this fixed the problem. But happened again two weeks later. Called Microsoft for help but since the warranty was up from the previous owner, Microsoft would not help with the issue unless I wanted to pay them $29.99. I just use the browser for things like Facebook, Audible, Kindle, and Netflix. The product itself is great. I love that Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, & PP) are already on the device.

    great movie player

16:9 display so no black bars. I just got it this and watched two full length movies and a couple hours of YouTube and other web goofing around with plenty of battery life left. The films looked great. That's quite a deal for well under $100. Fly with this and leave the more expensive devices at home and you'll be entertained the entire flight. Shipping was prompt. I think I got mine in about a week. As for the B grade body, if you're getting a keyboard case you won't see it anyway. Mine has a bit of missing paint and a few scratches on the back.

    Lightweight and good for school

With the keyboard, it is great for taking notes in class. It is light and easy to carry. The battery life isnt great, lasting maybe 5 or 6 hrs, if youre lucky, but for me that is just enough for me to use it at school and plug it in as soon as im home. For the price, its a great value. The only thing I dont like is youre practically forced to use internet explorer because it doesnt support chrome or firefox/doesnt have them in their app store.

    Great laptop alternative!

This is like a mini PC that I can carry in my purse! I love everything about it (except it will not play movies from Google Play offline like a phone or tablet). However everything else is great! I can read and edit Word or PPT or Excel documents. I can even use a MOUSE! Just make sure you let it update (the factory default config requires like 100 updates, which took like 12 hours). Couldn't be happier!

    Great Tablet/PC combo

Perfect for my job on the go, Does way more then my Android Tablet. Only complaint I have is the issue with not being able to close windows or tabs easily. Because it's not easy I have to look it up on google every time, and at times I find I have 30-40 windows open due to it being so hard to close them out. Other then that issue I love it.

    MS Surface

I love it. It's thin and not bulky like my other notebooks; allowing easy storage while on the fly. It has plenty of memory and is expandable w/ the card drive. The wifi works great and allows the mobility I need. Having the Windows OS allows me to use the compatible programs- Office, word, excel, Powerpt and etc. I am going to download Final Drift and I'll be good to go.
