Synopsis
The New York Times Bestseller *One of Rolling Stone 's 10 Best Music Books of 2015* An exhilarating and intimate account of the life of music legend Tom Petty, by an accomplished writer and musician who toured with Petty No one other than Warren Zanes, rocker and writer and friend, could author a book about Tom Petty that is as honest and evocative of Petty's music and the remarkable rock and roll history he and his band helped to write. Born in Gainesville, Florida, with more than a little hillbilly in his blood, Tom Petty was a Southern shit kicker, a kid without a whole lot of promise. Rock and roll made it otherwise. From meeting Elvis, to seeing the Beatles on Ed Sullivan, to producing Del Shannon, backing Bob Dylan, putting together a band with George Harrison, Dylan, Roy Orbison, and Jeff Lynne, making records with Johnny Cash, and sending well more than a dozen of his own celebrated recordings high onto the charts, Tom Petty's story has all the drama of a rock and roll epic. Now in his mid-sixties, still making records and still touring, Petty, known for his reclusive style, has shared with Warren Zanes his insights and arguments, his regrets and lasting ambitions, and the details of his life on and off the stage. This is a book for those who know and love the songs, from "American Girl" and "Refugee" to "Free Fallin'" and "Mary Jane's Last Dance," and for those who want to see the classic rock and roll era embodied in one man's remarkable story. Dark and mysterious, Petty manages to come back, again and again, showing us what the music can do and where it can take us., The New York Times Bestseller *One of Rolling Stone 's 10 Best Music Books of 2015* An exhilarating and intimate account of the life of music legend Tom Petty, by an accomplished writer and musician who toured with Petty. I got it early! It was worth the price. I got a picture emailed to me from my porch to prove it. So this was a peace of mind great idea that I saw on my inbox. The packaging was great because it was dropped on the porch floor which was wet. The package was protected and double wrapped which helped a lot. Great idea from the seller! It is as described on ebay.

The Good, The Bad, and the TOM.

I remember when "Damn the Torpedoes" first came out. I was in the habit of putting my newest acquisition at the front of the stack leaned against my turntable, and it took the place of honor the day I bought it. My mom came in and said "What the HELL? Who's THAT guy? Why is HE out front? Put that other one there--the one with those two cute guys on the motorcycles!" She was, of course, referring to "Cheap Trick: In Color & Black & White," which held the place of honor previously. Yeah, okay. So maybe Robin Zander and Tom Petersson WERE "cute guys," but Tom Petty didn't have to be "cute." He was TOM PETTY. The book was an enjoyable read. In fact, I received it on Friday morning and was 1/2 way through it by the time the seller contacted me to tell me he received delivery confirmation. ...

  • Tom Petty Commissioned Warren Zanes to Write this so it is what Tom feels is true.

Interesting Biography of a Pop Icon I Love Who Left Us Way too Soon. Tom Commissioned this to be written, so he approved this Version. Great Read.

  • COMPREHENSIVE and COMPELLING

Mr. Zanes did a great job and for many it is a 5 star book. For me, it could have been a bit shorter.
