A funky orangish wood with odd fissures, spots, and kind of a darker stained looking area (but it's natural.) About half of one side's scale is nice pretty wood grain. It seems that the thin slivers of wood for knife scales could easily come from maple, walnut, olive, oak, or birch wood instead of slashing costs by using whatever wood is the cheapest currently available. How much more could it be?
