The story of Emmeline Mosher, who, before her 14th birthday, was sent from her home on a farm in Maine to support her family by working in a cotton mill in Massachusetts. The year was 1839. • A book well-worth reading

Read this book in paper back several times over the years and wanted to replace it as it was falling apart. The story follows the fate of a young girl sent to work in the mills in & around Lynn, Massachusetts. It depicts an aspect of the industrial workplace and the harsh working conditions of mill workers that few have knowledge of today. When traveling in Massachusetts some years ago, we made it a point to take a side trip to visit some mill towns and tour one of the restored demonstrator mills. It really brought the book’s story to life.

    • Great!

I live in the same town that Emmeline grew up in, so was pretty cool to read about her. Sad though. She had a rough life!
