Reviews
"There can be no doubt that the time for America to welcome back a heroic warrior, even a literary one, is now. Burke does not disappoint. He has performed a magic trick possible to only the most imaginative and substantive of writers. He has written a book that is topical, but timeless." --Salon, "Reading one of Burke's novels is truly an immersive experience, with every ache and anguish feeling gut-wrenchingly real. It has been almost five years since the last Dave Robicheaux novel, and it was absolutely worth the wait." -- Associated Press, "Heaven-storming prose...the intimations of mortality that have hovered over this series for 30 years have never been sharper or sadder." --Kirkus, "Burke is at the top of his form, still drawing from the rich material of his family background in Louisiana and Texas as well as his deep knowledge of literature and history. Robicheaux rings with lovely prose and chills with a dark vision of America's current condition." -- Tampa Bay Times, "Burke is known for his lyrical, deeply melancholic prose, and once again it permeates every page of this profoundly elegiac novel. We tend to forget, however, that he is no slouch at plotting and at constructing hold-your-breath action scenes. Both traits are in evidence here, the former in the way he nimbly juggles the multiple strands of his narrative, the latter in the barn-burner of a climax."-- Booklist , Starred Review, "The plot of this smart best-selling thriller revolves around a murder case that becomes personal for investigator Dave Robicheaux, sucking him deep into a world of mobsters and political corruption in Louisiana." --AARP, "[An] enthralling yet grim novel of crime, hate, and tragedy. ... The novel's murders and lies--both committed with unsettling smiles--will captivate, start to finish." -- Publishers Weekly, "Burke is what fellow writers call a wordsmith. He can make your eyes water with a lyrical description."-- New York Times Book Review

Synopsis
New York Times Bestseller James Lee Burke's most beloved character, Dave Robicheaux, returns in this gritty, atmospheric mystery set in the towns and backwoods of Louisiana. DAVE ROBICHEAUX IS A HAUNTED MAN. Between his recurrent nightmares about Vietnam, his battle with alcoholism, and the sudden loss of his beloved wife, Molly, his thoughts drift from one irreconcilable memory to the next. Images of ghosts at Spanish Lake live on the edge of his vision. During a murder investigation, Dave Robicheaux discovers he may have committed the homicide he's investigating, one which involved the death of the man who took the life of Dave's beloved wife. As he works to clear his name and make sense of the murder, Robicheaux encounters a cast of characters and a resurgence of dark social forces that threaten to destroy all of those whom he loves. What emerges is not only a propulsive and thrilling novel, but a harrowing study of America: this nation's abiding conflict between a sense of past grandeur and a legacy of shame, its easy seduction by demagogues and wealth, and its predilection for violence and revenge. James Lee Burke has returned with one of America's favorite characters, in his most searing, most prescient novel to date.

    New Orleans Crime Nostalgia

There is no one better at doing New Orleans than James Lee Burke. From New Iberia, his crime noir sizzles with characters that just drip with eccentricity. A New Orleans that I would truly love to have experienced. Can't get enough of Burke. His lead character, Dave Robichaux is very flawed but a 'noble man' as he is referred to be his best friend, P.I. Crete Purcell. Together they manage to wreak havoc all across Louisiana. God Bless you Mr. Burke.

  • James lee Burke rules!

James lee Burke’s Dave Roicheaux nobels are my all time favorites having read some 2 or 3 times. Burke’s description of the various settings is like an artist painting a fine detailed picture.

It's a used book but well cared for...came from a library...not sure how that worked unless the library had a book sale ...
