It has consistent read/write access and build quality that can stand up to frequent everyday use. In addition, each hard drive consists of 70% or more recycled materials. This decreases the carbon footprint of each device. The Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 ST3250318AS is an internal hard disk with a 3.5-inch form factor. An OEM ST3250318AS is a bare drive. Each one weighs less than a pound and measures 6 by 4 by 1 inches. This size of HDD is typically installed in a 3.5-inch drive bay inside a desktop computer. You can use this to build your own computers or repair existing ones. It can fit in all types of cases ranging from full-sized towers to smaller home theater enclosures. It’s also possible to use this internal hard disk externally with a hard drive enclosure. You’ll just need a 3.5-inch enclosure with a SATA data connection. You can then bring it along on your travels to use as a portable hard drive.The ST3250318AS HDD requires power, which it receives through a standard Molex connection. When used in a desktop computer, that connection will come from the power supply unit. When used in an HDD enclosure, the hard drive will still connect internally to Molex. However, externally, the power will arrive via a USB cable or an adapter connected to a wall outlet. Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 drives also require a SATA data connection. This HDD employs the SATA II interface, which operates at up to 3 Gb/s. This disk is fully forward compatible with the SATA III interface as well.The 7200.12 name indicates that this Seagate Barracuda spins at 7200 revolutions per minute. The faster a drive can spin, the faster the magnetic recording and reading processes will be. The second number in the name indicates specifics about this particular 250GB desktop drive. Here, among other details, it indicates an 8MB cache. The cache hardware is the buffer between the motherboard and the mechanical hard drive. The larger the buffer, the faster the HDD will be. This allows it to provide greater accuracy when reading or writing. Average reads occur in under 8.5 milliseconds, and average writes occur in under 9.5. Even under load, it maintains whisper-quiet operation and has features that reduce heat generation and power consumption. Seagate leaves the Barracuda 7200 RPM 250GB SATA HDD unformatted for the convenience of the user. Once you’ve installed the ST3250318AS, you can then format it with the file system and software of your choosing.
