Use paper towel to remove ALL paint that contacts the lid contact points before carefully replacing the lid, otherwise you won't get the lid off without ruining the can. Do it soon after pouring as moisture in air can make it start hardening. 2 coats are recommended, but just one worked for me on bed frame. Use a wire brush to get rid of the loose rust before applying to make it spread well. More like a plating!
