6 operators (each with around 40 parameters) in this small box ... it's simply great! all parameters can be adjusted! hovewer it's mostly like a preset edit, not very suitable for live perfomance as the knobs can't be re-assigned. so the operator parameters adjusted one by one via selecting operator and parameter, and moving "value" slider. this synth can be used both as lead and bass or whatever sound you can get by adjusting 240 parameters and 32 configuration "algorithm"... overall, it's just like a very compact classical fm synth.6 operators (each with around 40 parameters) in this small box ... it's simply great! all parameters can be adjusted! hovewer it's mostly like a preset edit, not very suitable for live perfomance as the knobs can't be re-assigned. so the operator parameters adjusted one by one via selecting operator and parameter, and moving "value" slider. this synth can be used both as lead and bass or whatever sound you can get by adjusting 240 parameters and 32 configuration "algorithm"... overall, it's just like a very compact classical fm synth.

Easy way to get FM sound in a tiny box
What is FM sound? "Zzzz", sonant and loud the same time transparent when compared with some kinds of thick and rude analog bass. Very "electronic" sound. Piano is the most banal purpose (electropiano of course), but also it can do easily bells, longer pads and even some kind of bass, reminding or not reminding tb303 sequencies. More sounds... tweak it. Robotic speaking, oldschool game sounds or something more gentle with thoroughful tuning. Drum sounds? You can try and get maybe something acceptable, but i'd say "hardly" in general. It is not a drum synth. What is a bit confusing: fast attack produces very audible "switch-on-click" (by the way envelope settings are exactly rates, not times - i.e. 99 means the fastest and 0 means the slowest). It is a spice, ok let be component. It is not the whole main dish.

Great sound-amazing tech in an affordable package
Volca is a fantastic series of affordable synthesizers by Korg…they are the brand I have leaned on since the early 80’s…the best…the Volca came within the week of purchase-but the kaossilator I ordered at the same time is taking forever to arrive…but I’m waiting anxiously…

Neat handheld FM synth
The Korg volca fm feels like a bigger cousin to one of the Korg monotrons. There are certainly finer synths by Korg and others, but it is an affordable way to get FM synth sound. If you want more than 3 voice polyphony there are other more expensive options, but the volca fm is a great 'aural notepad'.

Amazing product with tons of patches available.
The best thing about the volca fm is its support and integration into the dx7 community. People have put a lot of work into making thousands of patches and if you look hard enough they can be yours, for free. Amazing. The FM sounds a little more dirty that a lot of the other FM synths but it has a sonic signature that is musical.
