Same product with some improvement. But with new flaws.
First off: this better not wind up with another release after the initial box set release. It is already bad that Hasbro and TakaraTomy have been doing this for so many years with various other sets and individual figures.. Especially with early releases of this set being convention based. There are already a lot of people who had gone to whatever convention(s) and pre-order sites the set was available through and having not just the same issues with the Dinobots, but even new problems. And I even worry that DNA Design will once again concentrate on applying excessive materials without actually improving on key areas for improvement. They did add proper combiner feet, better hands/ arms, a combiner weapon or two, gap fillers for Sludge, and updated wings for Grimlock. But the new wings on ... First off: this better not wind up with another release after the initial box set release. But the new wings on Grim did not lock the upper dino-mode body to the main body and the combiner uogrades have no storage features other than being used for making a little base like structure. Hasbro and TakaraTomy did a bit better than DNA Design with improved combiner mode parts. Upgraded what was Scarr’s tail/ gun into something better that also acts as a better hand. The right hand is also updated, but way too chunky for its figures the dino-mode. Nearly all of the weapon accessories are very loose both stored on each figure in dino-mode and combined. The Halberd melee weapon has it the worst. The club from Goryu could’ve been added to the combiner gun instead and the sword from Doryu could’ve had a better connection port at the top. The best updates to the set are the new hands and the addition of actual feet. But problems like the wings on the left leg not locking the upper body of the dino-mode in place as well as the Dino-modes bottom not having proper circular peg holes to better grip on the tail/ gun so it doesn’t easily off is another problem. I cannot really recommend this set to anyone. There was someone who even had a set that showed signs of being improperly cleaned up prior to assembly. And the way they are packaged can make at least one of them become warped. Goryu is the most likely to wind up having a slightly twisted upper dino-mode torso due to being packed on its side in a half transformed dino half transformes leg. That is one figure that should’ve been packed in robot mode due to the way the back of the Dino-mode upper torso is designed. If the combiner peg was designed differently so the spine of the back of the upper torso was better reinforced; then packing the figure in such a way may not be a problem. I absolutely hate how lazy Hasbro and TakaraTomy are. But we all wind up buying from them because what alternatives are there? Sure there are third party, but even those have their shortcomings. And if you buy vintage/ antique figures; you’re likely never going to want to toy around with them or even let a kid play with them unless they were truly built to last the ages. When it comes to toy collecting. There are main factors that must be kept in mind no matter what the figure is. Complexity in transformation (the biggest thing). They are not just for adult collectors and although a challenge might be welcomed every now and then. Simplicity should still be a must. There have been plenty of figures that have a decent balance, but still have issue’s. An example is the Legacy Gears. The only complaint I have with that figure is the bicep swivel being unnecessary. That or the chest cavity could’ve been less deep so everything could line up more perfectly. Pretty much every figure relies to heavily on lining things up a little to nearly for proper transformation. Because of this; many figures even wind up broken or missing pieces. People often hate figures such as the third party DX9 Hulkie due to how the upper and lower torso pieces connect. And there is the mainline PotP’s Starscream and its mold mate PotP’s Elita-1 which can be very frustrating to transform properly. And speaking of difficult transformations; S.S. 86 figures should better match their film based inspirations and yet fall short in various ways. Hotrod for example comes pretty close, but has some bits here and there that make it prone to breaking. It even uses some inspiration from Rodimus Convoy which was one of the most ambitious figures ever made and could have been improved on. But was all but totally scrapped! Well enough rambling on. The Dino Force/ Dinoking set isn’t entirely bad. But when compared to other core class figures and considering both past successes and failures; everyone knows that they could be better. Even third party like WiP DX9 Hulkie others are good examples. Even mainline figures from the Armada/ Unicron Trilogy are good examples. It’s like Hasbro and TakaraTomy just cannot focus clearly on what they are doing. They once even had someone try to show how Grimlock would turn into a leg and that was disastrous! Get some ‘GOOD’ engineers and designers working on these! No need to drop the Core Class line!
