Why I bought this model twice, years apart
I drink a lot of tea, black, green, varietals of each, sometimes flavored or with additional ingredients. Not all teas require the same temperature to brew properly. I have a 2qt teapot, and I have yet to find a kettle of that volume: this is the one which comes closest. When I buy an appliance, first I research & compare several models. This had the best features and the largest capacity. Trying to boil even a pint or two of water in the microwave is futile, even after 8 minutes—I tried that, while waiting to buy the next kettle. ‘Twas never brillig. I haven’t timed this kettle, but it‘s brillig in about 5 minutes. I use a tea basket for my looseleaf tea, instead of letting the ‘slithy toves gyre and gimbel in the wabe’ which means the ‘agony of the leaves’ is not achieved either. But ... But I don’t need to strain the tea as it’s poured, and it’s so very much easier to clean the teapot I was very happy with the earlier version of this model. I blame the antique wiring in this stupid cramped rental for shorting either the base heater, or the connection on the kettle itself. After I looked into newer models available now. I kept seeing this model as still the best for my needs. The new base & kettle are about 1.5” broader than the first model. The plug is twice as big as the earlier one. The new kettle wouldn’t fit in the space available, even rearranged, and the plug would have taken up three slots. So I went to the other counter, with more slots and better placed, and rearranged it a tiny bit, and there the kettle sits. I am as happy with the improved version of the same model as I was with the original. No vorpal sword needed, just a warmed pot and cups.

We drink all different kinds of tea and this kettle heats water to the proper temperature for each variety, is easy to use and keep clean, has a small footprint and nice features such as the Hold Temp button. This is our second of this model as the first eventually developed a leak from a corroded screw holding the handle from inside the kettle. This version eliminates the screws and replaces them with a (welded?) sheet of stainless steel. Worth EVERY Dollars!!!
This kettle is an investment. I purchased mine on eBay “previously owned, gently used”. It is in immaculate condition and i suppose it will stay that way as long as i treat it as well as the former owner. Then i can pass it on down to my grandson or daughter. Anyways, I’m sure it will outlive me! And it’s a marvelous feeling knowing that the numbers aren’t going to rub off, that if i forget about it, its not going to keep on boiling water. And if i don’t want boiling water, just water hot enough to drink, ya know, that’s a great feeling too. Anywho, this kettle does it all and doesn’t have ANY of the issues mentioned on every single brand sold. So, Breville, I love you for taking the time to engineer an electric kettle that meets every single one of my requirements including being ... This kettle is an investment. I'm a big Breville fan and have many of their small appliances. This kettle is the best, highest quality kettle I've owned. The different temperatures brew any kind of tea to perfection. Having the water at the right temperature for white, green, oolong really does make a difference in flavor - a big difference that I wasn't expecting. The French Press coffee setting is wonderful and makes an amazing brew. The steel kettle pours without dripping, the handle is comfortable, and the controls are easy to read and use. If you're not sure what temp to use for a certain tea, the manual has a handy temperature guide that includes many types of tea to guide you. Another bonus on this kettle is the keep warm function.
