I used the sun to warm it up and some weights to hold it flat. Only took about an hour. It doesn't move at all on my carpet. There is no unusual smell, just normal PVC outgassing that goes away in a few days.Its thickness seems standard for a heavy duty mat. And it's BIG! Overall, great value for the money, seems to be well made, and looks exactly like a standard PVC chair mat. No complaints so far.
