I assume the bouncing around from it's journey overseas disintegrated the 50-60 year old padding and adhesive and a dusty/sandy substance was covering the lens. After a quick panic and once over with a shop vac everything was fine. Thank goodness everything was dry and nothing stuck to the glass or between the focus/aperture rings. All good in the end and perfect condition.
