Synopsis
About The Cover..."Steve was definitely taken with Jeneil. Dr. Sprague wondered why Steve was so closely involved with her with his feelings for her being so deep. It worried him since in his weekly meetings with Peter, he was being told that she was waiting for him. He marvelled how such a quiet well mannered girl of refined tastes had managed to take the "Chinese Stud" and the "White Stallion" both and tamed them. That was the biggest puzzle, and they were tamed. He wondered what the future held for all three of them."******The Songbird / Volume TwoLying in the darkness Peter thought about Jeneil's idea of them missing each other in life. He touched his stomach and his network of scars. If that was true then they were worth it. He turned onto his side and was soon asleep.Peter woke up and turned over. Reaching out for Jeneil, he lifted his head, surprised that she wasn't next to him. He looked at the clock. "Six," he said, "I have an hour to get to work." Standing up and tying his robe, he walked to the living room. Jeneil was sitting on the sofa with a drawing board on her lap and a notebook on top of the drawing board."Jeneil," he said, going to her, "you haven't been to bed at all, have you?""No," she said, lost in thought, "but I'm fine. I feel great." He sat next to her and she kissed him gently. Her eyes sparkled and her cheeks were flushed."You look beautiful," he said, "incredibly beautiful.""I'm cosmic," she corrected."Great and I overslept. I can't do a damn thing about it."She laughed. "It's okay. I'm at a universal level anyway; I'd be totally useless right now.""Have you been drawing all night?" he asked, reaching for the notebook. She slapped her hands down on it to keep him from taking it, surprising both of them."I'm sorry. No, I haven't been drawing, I've been writing. It's a journal kind of thing. You know, like a diary. I'm sorry, but I don't want to show that much of myself to anybody. If I ever leave it lying around, promise me that you won't read it.""I promise," he said, still surprised. She kissed him again. "You get showered. I'll get breakfast.""Aren't you tired?""Not yet, maybe in an hour," and she went to the kitchen. Looking at the notebook, Peter shook his head then went to shower.******The Songbird is about Jeniel, a young woman from a small town in Nebraska who believed in fairy tales, a prince charming, and happy endings. She goes on a quest to find herself before the "conveyor belt" of responsibility forces her to accept a lesser existence. In her quest for superlative, she almost destroys herself and the lives of those around her.Jeneil works in the records department of a New England hospital. She finds her Prince Charming in Peter, a Chinese gang kid from the streets of New York's Chinatown, who is a doctor in his final year of residency. The Songbird is their LOVE story. Add Steve, Peter's best friend, also a doctor finishing his residency to the mix, and Peter's Grandfather who teaches Peter about The Songbird and you have the fundamental beginnings of one hell of a story. The Songbird is a story of love, communication, murder, mystery, danger, betrayal, suspense, honesty and dignity, and a look at life which covers the trials of human relationships. It is steeped in a reality that will cause everyone who reads The Songbird to identify with their own life experiences and share a oneness with the characters. The author has laid out The Songbird from beginning to end, stacking one incident on top of another like a set of logo blocks, carefully interlocking the past, present, and future together in a not so perfect world. The author, who leaves clues and dangles unanswered questions throughout The Songbird is very adept in navigating the reader through a maze of twists and turns and surprises in tying it together, yet is able to keep the end of the story a secret until the closing pages. You may have trouble turning out the light with this one.
