It wasn’t broken but appeared to have come unglued or unstuck somehow. The ear was still in the bag so I was able to add crazy glue and stick it back on. My 3 year old now knows it’s detachable so she keeps breaking it off now so I can reglue. She threw 2 of them in our toilet and it remained there for at least 2 days. After all of that time under water there was no color fading.
