Unit itself was in reasonable physical condition with limited scratches, no dents and nothing loose inside. BIOS was latest version and editable, showing no faults except for missing hard drive (as advertised, and easily resolved). Note: Dell really doesn't like a missing hard drive (no other boot options work)! Thanks for the obvious care taken in preparation.

I contacted the seller, and sent some pictures of it to them. They worked with me to make it alright by a refund amount which we settled on. The customer service from these folks is amazingly good, and they made sure I got a refund from eBay. Damage aside, it's still 95% useable - and that's good enough for me.
