Notes
The latest volume in Magnetic Eye's Redux Series revisits one of the milestones of the grunge era, in which an array of artists from across the doom and stoner metal underground re-imagine Alice in Chains' nightmare of drug-seeking impulses and inner darkness, Dirt. Comparisons between grunge and the development of sludgy stoner metal can be traced most clearly to this album, a milestone that cemented the cultural shift from vapid early 90s hair metal into something more raw, grimey and real as the preeminent style of popular heavy music. Dirt Redux features the entirety of the classic album covered and reinvigorated from end-to-end by scene heavyweights and rising stars, including Khemmis, Thou, -(16)-, Howling Giant, Forming the Void, The Otolith (ex-SubRosa) and more.

  • Surprisingly great coverage of Dirt

There’s a couple reasons I didn’t expect to like this. 1) I rarely like a cover if I already love the original, 2) I F’n love AIC. AIC is the class of the scene and era. No disrespect to the others, I like them all. I’m a metalhead that wasn’t threatened by the Seattle scene, I embraced it. I feel AIC towered above all, only Soundgarden was close in talent and uniqueness. I mostly bought this cuz I’m a completist type of collector(avoid that disease). But I was pleasantly surprised at some of the renditions of these tunes. I feel cover songs should be a reimagining, why bother with a near duplication. Some of these are slightly different D but some are significantly different, all but unrecognizable. And that’s how it should be. The only cover record I felt this good about was Nativiry in ...
