Winner of the 2012 Fifty Books/Fifty Covers show, organized by Design Observer in association with AIGA and Designers & Books Winner of the 2014 Type Directors Club Communication Design Award Praise for Penguin Drop Caps: "[Penguin Drop Caps] convey a sense of nostalgia for the tactility and aesthetic power of a physical book and for a centuries-old tradition of beautiful lettering." - Fast Company "Vibrant, minimalist new typographic covers…. Bonus points for the heartening gender balance of the initial selections." -Maria Popova, Brain Pickings "The Penguin Drop Caps series is a great example of the power of design. Why buy these particular classics when there are less expensive, even free editions of Great Expectations ? Because they're beautiful objects. Paul Buckley and Jessica Hische's fresh approach to the literary classics reduces the design down to typography and color. Each cover is foil-stamped with a cleverly illustrated letterform that reveals an element of the story. Jane Austen's A ( Pride and Prejudice ) is formed by opulent peacock feathers and Charlotte Bronte's B ( Jane Eyre ) is surrounded by flames. The complete set forms a rainbow spectrum prettier than anything else on your bookshelf." -Rex Bonomelli, The New York Times "Drool-inducing." - Flavorwire "Classic reads in stunning covers-your book club will be dying." - Redbook

Synopsis
Unburdened by the material necessities of the more fortunate, the denizens of Cannery Row discover rewards unknown in more traditional society. Henry the painter sorts through junk lots for pieces of wood to incorporate into the boat he is building, while the girls from Dora Flood's bordello venture out now and then to enjoy a bit of sunshine. Lee Chong stocks his grocery with almost anything a man could want, and Doc, a young marine biologist who ministers to sick puppies and unhappy souls, unexpectedly finds true love Cannery Row is just a few blocks long, but the story it harbors is suffused with warmth, understanding, and a great fund of human values. First published in 1945, Cannery Row focuses on the acceptance of life as it is--both the exuberance of community and the loneliness of the individual. John Steinbeck draws on his memories of the real inhabitants of Monterey, California, and interweaves their stories in this world where only the fittest survive--creating what is at once one of his most humorous and poignant works. In Cannery Row , John Steinbeck returns to the setting of Tortilla Flat to create another evocative portrait of life as it is lived by those who unabashedly put the highest value on the intangibles--human warmth, camaraderie, and love., An all-new edition of the highly successful text written by a respected author team, leaders in the field of literacy education and the use of new technologies for literacy. Developed for a methods course in reading/literacy, this textbook is organized around a central proposition: the insights university students develop about literacy and children largely determine their effectiveness as teachers.

  • One of the best reads, ever. A classic for humanity.

Cannery Row is Steinbeck's haunting memory of the great, lost times he had at the unequaled splendor of the California's cypress, pine, and unforgettable character forested coastline. The fish were always an after thought to John. If you've never seen Cannery Row, and it's town-lets, Steinbeck gives you a beer-shake, frog scented taste of that which is sublime here in the actual space and in the mind of Steinbeck longing to return to the sea and to his friends real and imagined. A book written more for men who have grown weary of women, to tell the truth. As a feminine woman, I'm not insulted. I can peek into the dank, dingy world of these men who see the same scene as one of glorious. It's like a trip to a tire & wheel or hardware store when a gal would rather be shopping for lingerie ...

  • Nice short read

A good read but not great. Much better than Tortilla Flats but nowhere at the level of The Grapes of Rath or East of Eden . I would not recommend Tortilla Flats but would Cannery Row . The characters and story line are much more in depth.
