Putting romance onstage, The Tempest gives us a magician, Prospero, a former duke of Milan who was displaced by his treacherous brother, Antonio. Prospero is exiled on an island, where his only companions are his daughter, Miranda, the spirit Ariel, and the monster Caliban. When his enemies are among those caught in a storm near the island, Prospero turns his power upon them through Ariel and other spirits. The characters exceed the roles of villains and heroes. Prospero seems heroic, yet he enslaves Caliban and has an appetite for revenge. Caliban seems to be a monster for attacking Miranda, but appears heroic in resisting Prospero, evoking the period of colonialism during which the play was written. Miranda's engagement to Ferdinand, the Prince of Naples and a member of the shipwrecked party, helps resolve the drama. I purchased a book in Very Good condition. When I received it, almost every page had paragraphs crossed out and/or complete sentences crossed out in pencil. The spine was cracked, too. Did anyone actually inspect this? Now I have no book and had to waste my time opening a return, repackaging, driving to the Post Office just to ship it back to you.

  • The Tempest

I have been a lover of Shakespeare most of my life. This play had been one that I never got around to. With a title like" The Tempest " I expected something riveting, not so. Characters were boring and story dragged even for a short play. I wasn't impressed and can't imagine they made a movie of it,which I haven't seen. All I can say is BORING! But one good point, for beginners this copy has page to page glossaries.
