Synopsis
"A grand and epic prose poem . . . The purely human experience of war in the Pacific, written in the graceful imagery of a human being who--somehow--survived."--Tom Hanks See Robert Leckie's story in the HBO miniseries The Pacific Here is one of the most riveting first-person accounts ever to come out of World War II. Robert Leckie enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in January 1942, shortly after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. In Helmet for My Pillow we follow his odyssey, from basic training on Parris Island, South Carolina, all the way to the raging battles in the Pacific, where some of the war's fiercest fighting took place. Recounting his service with the 1st Marine Division and the brutal action on Guadalcanal, New Britain, and Peleliu, Leckie spares no detail of the horrors and sacrifices of war, painting an unvarnished portrait of how real warriors are made, fight, and often die in the defense of their country. From the live-for-today rowdiness of marines on leave to the terrors of jungle warfare against an enemy determined to fight to the last man, Leckie describes what war is really like when victory can only be measured inch by bloody inch. Woven throughout are Leckie's hard-won, eloquent, and thoroughly unsentimental meditations on the meaning of war and why we fight. Unparalleled in its immediacy and accuracy, Helmet for My Pillow will leave no reader untouched. This is a book that brings you as close to the mud, the blood, and the experience of war as it is safe to come.

i'm a big fan of the show 'the pacific'; i'm one of the few that thinks it's better than 'band of brothers'--way more harrowing than a european war. that aside, well packaged, showed up right on time, groovy book. thanks y'all!

Great for viewers of "The Pacific"

If you watched "The Pacific" it's interesting to read the material it was based on. The author has been a professional writer since High School so it is written better than a lot of memoirs. Also interesting to see how certain characters were actually constructed from several different actual people ("Snafu" is a good example). One interesting point: author refers to NO one by actual name. Officers and enlisted are referred to by their nicknames only.

  • True perspective from a combat veteran

A friend of mines father was a marine who on was part of the invasion of Pelau and there is not much written about it other than the horrific losses suffered by the 5th marine division. Thank you Robert Leckie for bringing the facts to the fore front so we now know why he didn't talk a lot about it. My uncle was also an island hopper with the sea bees rebuilding the air strips so the war could progress. He was also on Guadalcanal.

  • From even before Parris Island

Book is good not as expected differs a bit from the HBO series the Pacific. The story drags on a bit in many spots but pretty easy to follow.

  • Helmet for my Pillow

If you are looking for an excellent war narrative, this will not disappoint. It is all a war narrative should be and ranks with the best such as "The forgotten soldier" and "With the Old Breed." A must read.
