Although he's supposed to be on leave, he begins to investigate the death with the hope of finding a reason. In the meantime, Sergeant Lewis is busily studying for his impending inspector exams while investigating the case of a missing student."Deadly Slumber" - The perpetually inquisitive Inspector Morse along with his sidekick Sgt. Lewis investigate a medical malpractice case that left a woman brain-damaged after what was to be a minor routine operation. Her father, a wealthy businessman, is left extremely traumatized, but is he affected enough to seek a murderous revenge?"The Day of the Devil" - When a wacko mental patient named John Barrie escapes from an asylum, Inspector Morse is hot on his trail. The catch is that Barrie is a man of a thousand faces--a master of disguise. Barrie engages in a battle of wits with Morse that heats up when the local police organize a manhunt. Morse realizes he's after more than the average escaped nutjob when he discovers signs of ritual Satanism in the sleepy town of Oxfordshire, and he must team up with a plucky female psychiatrist to stop the dastardly villain's heinous hijinks."Twilight of the Gods" - A wealthy businessman has donated a college building to the city of Oxford, which is deemed by many to be in poor taste due to the fact that it is a modern rendition of the Rajput Palace. All the same, the locals show their appreciation for the gift in a glorious celebration. Meanwhile, Inspector Morse and Sgt. Lewis are busy investigating the murder of a journalist who was in the process of preparing an article that would possibly exploit the real motives behind the wealthy benefactor's kind gesture."The Way Through the Woods" - Inspector Morse and Sgt. Lewis search the Wytham Woods for the body of what was supposedly the Lovers Lane Killer's fifth victim. Justice is served in one way or another when the murderer is killed in a prison fight, but the young girl's unrecovered body has Morse intensely perplexed.
