The 14-inch Estwing axe is two tools in one, with a blunt backside sledgehammer that further assists with splitting wood. This wood-cutting tool is made of solid tempered steel with a double-tempered head and is forged in one piece. The axe splits logs along the grain.       Great little kindling ave

      Works good for splitting dried wood for kindling. Not good for trying to split a bigger piece as the wedge angle is too great for that application. Not designed for that anyway. Cut yourself a L shaped block of wood out of a tree trunk to rest the wood on you are splitting so your hands are out of the way. Cut it tall enough so you don't have to bend down. This was my xmas present for my girlfriend so I now have an efficient kindling factory. LOL...

      Great tool for making kindling.

      I got this for making kindling. I already had a framing hammer from Estwing so I knew it would be of quality build. This maul is perfect for making kindling. The balance is great and no wood in the handle so it will be good for the rest of my life. It came with a nifty sheath to protect it and me. I am totally satisfied with this tool and I know others will be too.

      Fireside BEST friend.

      This is my second Fireside friend. I have two woodstoves and decided I needed one for each stove. It is the most impressive kindling maker I have ever seen. The only drawback is that it is dangerous. It is heavy and sharp. The plus side of that is that there are no hidden dangers, you know it's not a toy. Estwing makes good stuff, this bad boy is no exception.

      Wood burners friend!

      I wish I had found this mini maiul 30 years ago when I was burning wood as a primary source of heat! Now, it is a welcome companion camping, when I bring wood just a bit too large....... Does the job of a 6# maul in much less packing space. Not for splinters to start the embers, but meant for intermediate pieces leading up to the big logs. Definitely, as the name says, A Foreside Friend!

      Mini me meet mini maul. A 4 lb. maul head on an axe handle what can you do with that? Turns out a lot. Perfect for splitting big pieces last minute before they go into the stove. I use mine by the wood stove but also outside when I'm bringing fire wood inside.
