Synopsis
In his early thirties, Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968) convinced everyone that he had abandoned making art in favor of playing chess. But from 1946 to 1966, he was secretly at work in his studio on West 14th Street in New York City. There he produced his final masterpiece: tant donns: 1 la chute d'eau, 2 le gaz d'clairage , composed of a battered wood door through which one views a prone, nude female, holding aloft an antique gas lamp against a landscape of trees, waterfall, and sky. Unveiled as a permanent installation at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in July 1969, the year after Duchamp's death, it startled the art world with its explicit eroticism and voyeurism, as well as its trompe l'oeil realism. Since its public debut, tant donns has been recognized as one of the most important and enigmatic works of the 20th century. Published to commemorate the fortieth anniversary of the original installation of tant donns and to accompany the first major exhibition on the artwork and its studies, this richly illustrated book presents a wealth of new research and documents that draw upon previously unpublished works of art and materials. The catalogue also examines the critical and artistic reception of tant donns, as evidenced by the subsequent work of Les Levine, Hannah Wilke, Robert Gober, Marcel Dzama, Ray Johnson, and other artists who have engaged with Duchamp's provocative and challenging tableau-construction.

- 2***r (162)- Feedback left by buyer.Past 6 monthsVerified purchaseThe item was received in excellent condition. Packaged securely in a very thick padded envelope. The shipping time was quite fast. It was definitely as described on the website. To be honest, I’m not sure about the value for the money. It’s nice to receive a very fine first edition from 1962, but the money paid seems a bit high. However, the quality of the work and its overall appearance is excellent. I’m sure it will grow on me over time. Thank you for this purchase. Would buy from seller againCuster And The Great Controversy, Robert M. Utley, HCDJ 1962 EXCELLENT! (#286011608724)
- p***e (64)- Feedback left by buyer.Past 6 monthsVerified purchaseItem shipped quickly, and was packaged well. Item was as described and was a decent value… the auto reject for offers was set higher than the discount rate at the time I purchased it, so I was unable to negotiate the pricing. I recommend this seller!Houston Displayed, Battle of San Jacinto, Col. Robert Coleman, LIMITED ED 1964 (#276606668955)
