In Howard Hawks's screwball masterpiece adapted from the stage play THE FRONT PAGE by Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur, star reporter Hildy Johnson (Rosalind Russell), once married to suave editor Walter Burns (Cary Grant), plans to leave the stressful newspaper world behind and marry a boring insurance agent. Walter won't reveal his feelings for Hildy but tries to keep her from leaving by convincing her to cover one last story, a politically motivated execution. When the convict manages to escape, chaos breaks loose, and Hildy finds herself working alongside Walter to break the story wide open. HIS GIRL FRIDAY is a loose, freewheeling gem featuring some of the fastest dialogue ever filmed (peppered with inspired ad-libbing by Grant and Russell, each appearing at comedic high points in their careers). Hawks, who changed the original story of two newspapermen into a battle of the sexes, keeps the frenetic action careening forward and allows a few slim but luminous notes of genuine affection to slip into Hildy and Walter's storm of hilarious verbal barbs, creating a potent and heartfelt classic that stands as one of the most influential comedies ever made.

    Classic Screwball Comedy

    Fast talking, witty opponents Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell are well matched in this clever screwball comedy. Grant plays a newspaper editor relentlessly after the scoop and his ex-wife and favorite reporter (Russell). Russell threatens to quit the paper for good to marry her stuffed shirt of a fiance, played by Ralph Bellamy. Verbal and comedic fireworks ensue, including Russell hiding an escaped convict in her roll top desk. Grant is handsome, Russell is gorgeous and the acting, chemistry and comedic timing between the two superb. Well directed by Howard Hawks, who also helmed the two in "Bringing Up Baby." This film is based on a play called "The Front Page" and was later remade as a film of that same name starring Jake Lemon.

    The Magic of Fun: His Girl Friday, from Howard Hank

    His Girl Friday is great movie from a past in Hollywood long ago. Howard Hank at his best. Staring Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell. Fun in so many way as you watch and enjoy great story tell on film. So much magic between Rosalind and Cary. Just nice watch, 5 star winner in my book.

    Great movie

    Not one of my favorite Cary Grant movies, but ranks up in the top third. Enjoyable movie and this version tends to be a higher quality print than other versions I've seen/purchased. If you like this movie and are hesitant because of poor versions you've received before, this is the one to get in DVD format. Picture and audio quality is great.
