I just unscrewed the old tub spout from the 5 inch nipple, cleaned the threads, applied the Teflon sealing tape to the clean threads and screwed the new spout onto the 5 inch nipple pipe. To test the new spout, I turned the water on to a mid level, pulled down on the spout valve, it sealed and diverted the water up to the shower head. To my surprise, not much wasted/leaked water from around the new valve.
