Having the surface-mount microcontroller come soldered on and pre-programmed is a big value add. Just had to populate the boards, power it up, and adjust the display contrast. Seller was friendly and super responsive in getting me registered for access to the latest documentation and firmware for this unit. 10/10 all around.

The kit version is fun to put together for hobbyists and isn't difficult at all for those with even basic soldering skills, a good iron, and tool to form the component leads to a uniform size. The one issue I have with this kit is with the 100uf capacitor that goes on the main board and sits below the screen module. The cap is too tall and needs to be laid on its side. A shorter but wider cap would fit properly.
