"This book uniquely combines history, philosophy, and psychology in a way that is both entertaining and extremely useful for the self-development of the reader. This is not some cheap "self-help" gimmick but a true manual of self-development. Robertson has an interesting way of leading readers through a journey of how Stoic philosophy works, how it was utilized effectively by Marcus Aurelius, and suggests practical exercises to utilize these methods in the reader's own life." -- Small Wars Journal, "This book uniquely combines history, philosophy, and psychology in a way that is both entertaining and extremely useful for the self-development of the reader. Synopsis
"This book is a wonderful introduction to one of history's greatest figures: Marcus Aurelius. His life and this book are a clear guide for those facing adversity, seeking tranquility and pursuing excellence." --Ryan Holiday, bestselling author of The Obstacle is the Way and The Daily Stoic The life-changing principles of Stoicism taught through the story of its most famous proponent. Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius was the last famous Stoic philosopher of the ancient world. The Meditations , his personal journal, survives to this day as one of the most loved self-help and spiritual classics of all time. In How to Think Like a Roman Emperor , cognitive psychotherapist Donald Robertson weaves the life and philosophy of Marcus Aurelius together seamlessly to provide a compelling modern-day guide to the Stoic wisdom followed by countless individuals throughout the centuries as a path to achieving greater fulfillment and emotional resilience. How to Think Like a Roman Emperor takes readers on a transformative journey along with Marcus, following his progress from a young noble at the court of Hadrian--taken under the wing of some of the finest philosophers of his day--through to his reign as emperor of Rome at the height of its power. Robertson shows how Marcus used philosophical doctrines and therapeutic practices to build emotional resilience and endure tremendous adversity, and guides readers through applying the same methods to their own lives. Combining remarkable stories from Marcus's life with insights from modern psychology and the enduring wisdom of his philosophy, How to Think Like a Roman Emperor puts a human face on Stoicism and offers a timeless and essential guide to handling the ethical and psychological challenges we face today.

A rocky start after I had to NUDGE the Seller into checking on my order after MORE than a week with NOTHING happening... But Seller communication was GOOD and the item showed up, well packaged, within the delivery window. Item was well priced, and they had a series that I STRUGGLED to find elsewhere, in NEW condition. I would recommend this seller if you can't find it elsewhere, that's the best I can give them.

  • Well written and presented.

While I'm still new to Stoicism, I found that How To Think Like A Roman Emperor as well as other books by the author, Donald Robertson, are easy to read and understand. He writes in a story style instead of just listing quotes and principals. Maybe older, more experienced Stoics prefer the later, but I get more out of stories than just listing facts. I bought this print version as I prefer to have a book in my hands that I can page back or forward as needed. This edition is nicely printed on medium weight stock in a good size font. It is a nice size to hold - 8.5 x 5.5 .The message inside is even better.

  • "STOCISM in the Time of Covid-19"

Great quick read. This will make the reading of deep philosophical ideas and concepts a great pleasure. Besides, I really don't know a single real guy who would not want to be an emperor for a day anyway Although the book will not make you an instant student of Sophocles, it will enlighten you. Perhaps, through studying the ideas of stoic thought, it can improve the quality of our highly stressed COVID-19/ intensely pressured mind sets. How to see the BIG picture in life really matters.

  • This is a great title and drew me to purchasing the book.

The nonfiction part is very informative. The fiction part is not as compelling. I would recommend this book as revealing the Stoic philosophy in relevant and modern language. Philosophy is often not readable, but this work is very appropriate for any reader.
