Unfortunately, Nintendo does not seal these from the factory, so there's no definitive way to know if it's truly new-in-box. However, there were no other signs of wear and all packaging and padding was present, so perhaps this was just a defect from the factory.

    It's a looker, good set of features and very comfortable on the wrist.

    I like it more than I expected. It looks unusual and feels very comfortable on the wrist. The only negative is the price, G Shock shouldn't cost more than $150 in general.
