En la encíclica, que lleva como título la expresión italiana «Laudato si'» -en castellano, «Alabado seas»-, el Papa muestra su preocupación por aquellas cuestiones que tienen que ver con el cuidado de nuestro planeta: el cambio climático y el calentamiento global; la contaminación producida por los residuos no biodegradables, tóxicos y radioactivos; las energías renovables; la corrupción en el mercado internacional del petróleo o el consumo personal de las energías, entre otras. También hace referencia a la contaminación en nuestras vidas del mundo digital, de las nuevas tecnologías y más en concreto de las redes sociales. El Santo Padre recoge el extenso magisterio de san Juan Pablo II y de Benedicto XVI. Resultan novedosas las referencias que hace al magisterio del patriarca ecuménico de Constantinopla, Bartolomé I, en temas como el cambio climático, la deforestación y la destrucción de los humedales. No se trata de un texto dirigido solo a católicos, sino que el propio Papa invita a todas las personas a reflexionar en serio, pues «nunca la humanidad ha tenido tanto poder sobre sí misma, y nada garantiza que lo utilizará bien».
