Good but needs a little help

The overall quality is very good. However I am surprised that none of the reviewers commented on the follower. The problem is, though the follower holds open the bolt after the last round, but not by engaging the boltstop lever. Instead the follower is getting in front of the bolt face and holds the bolt to the rear in that manner. That is not how it supposed to work because , now when you remove the magazine the bolt will go forward since it was not held back by the boltstop but by the follower. It is an easy fix if you are a little handy with your tools. I fixed it by installing a sheet metal extansion below the follower that pushes the follower a somewhat to the left, thereby allowing the protrusion on the left rear of the follower to engage the boltstop lever like it was meant to ...

  • Top critical review

    Poor fit required some rework

To determine the quality and function of this ProMag magazine, I used a factory Ruger 10 round magazine as my baseline. ProMag's magazine, which is very well made and finished, looks great. However, looks alone are not enough. Inserting the magazine took considerable force with 10 rounds in it and the rifle bolt closed. Taking out a round and less resistance was encountered. It inserts better with the bolt locked open. But keep in mind that unless you want a round in the chamber, you don't want to insert the magazine with an open bolt. I made note of this, because it means that there is inadequate internal travel when fully loaded. Also, the actual fit in the magazine well is not great. It wobbles a bit once in, but it binds as you rock it back to latch. I noticed that this is due to ...

  • Words well with a few issues

Bought two mags. A review I read noted difficulty in loading 10 rounds, I had the same issue. I did what he said he did in removing the plastic spring base at bottom of mag. That then allowed 10 rds. to be loaded. With 10 rds. loaded, one of the mags bulged out at the bottom which looked as if the base plate might pop off. I mic'd the mag at the bottom and compared it to the other mag which did not have that problem and discovered that it was a fair bit wider. I very carefully compressed the sides in my press(with bottom plate and spring removed) so now the bottom plate fits tighter. Loaded 10 rds. and no more problems. With the bolt closed, both mags seem to install a bit harder (fully loaded) than the 5 rd. Ruger mag. All in all they should work good for the plinker or target ...

  • Typical problems

I've read reviews for Promag and Ruger genuine10rd mini 14 magazines and they both received mixed reviews, it seems there's something about the 10rd mags because the 5rd and 20rd both receive great reviews. These particular ones do not have any manufacturer's name on them so not sure if it's Promag like the ad says or not. I didn't experience jamming but the bolt wouldn't close a few times and I had to push the bolt closed every time with these mags. It seems the spring tension may be too hard with 10 rounds in the magazine because I didn't experience any problems with 8 rounds in the mag.

  • Worse than the Ruger mags

Dimensional copy of the Ruger 10 round mag. Still can't insert a full magazine with the bolt closed, Promag had a chance to fix it but passed on it. Mine do hold open the bolt when the magazine is empty, I saw some complaints about that but haven't experienced it. Metal is thinner and has some sharp edges that might need a little deburring with a file or sandpaper to smooth them over to get the mag to insert and remove better. Springs are pretty stiff out of the box. There's no writing or stamps for Promag or the model anywhere on the magazine for some reason. If you're hoping these will alleviate any problems you had with the Ruger mags you won't find it here. Yes these are cheaper but I wouldn't call them good value, maybe for 15 bucks I might. They need a little work and do the job ...
