They were jammed together with no packing material whatsoever. They were completely stuck together, one inside the other. Trying to pull them apart only succeeded in hurting my hands. I had to search for a solution. If anyone has the same problem, put the baskets in very hot water, then ice in the inside basket. Heat expands the outer basket and ice contracts the inner so they finally pulled apart.
