I wrap it once stretching the lace and then unwrap it and start again still stretching the lace making an X on the second pass. Twice is usually enough times to get the length. They last a long time and I don't like the slip on covers. I used to buy these at Pep Boys but I found out these are not available there anymore. I don't have a picture of the process but it looks cool
