You have to run them off a USB port/charger, which is what I'm doing, or 3 AAA batteries. You also have to understand that if you run off of batteries, the display shuts off after some seconds, to conserve batteries. The only thing I would change is that when you run off of the USB, you can dim the display (3 levels) but you can't shut it off/ I'd buy these again, though.
