    Synopsis
A bestselling and internationally-acclaimed masterpiece of the locked-room mystery genre Japan, 1936. An old eccentric artist living living with seven women has been found dead- in a room locked from the inside. His diaries reveal alchemy, astrology and a complicated plan to kill all seven women. Shortly afterwards, the plan is carried out: the women are found dismembered and buried across rural Japan. By 1979, these Tokyo Zodiac Murders have been obsessing a nation for decades, but not one of them has been solved. A mystery-obsessed illustrator and a talented astrologer set off around the country - and you follow, carrying the enigma of the Zodiac murderer through madness, missed leads and magic tricks. You have all the clues, but can you solve the mystery before they do?, Astrologer, fortuneteller, and self-styled detective Kiyoshi Mitarai must in one week solve a macabre murder mystery that has baffled Japan for 40 years. Who murdered the artist Umezawa, raped and killed his daughter, and then chopped up the bodies of six others to create Azoth, the supreme woman? With maps, charts, and other illustrations, this story of magic and illusion, pieced together like a great stage tragedy, challenges the reader to unravel the mystery before the final curtain., One of The Guardian 's "Top 10 Locked Room Mysteries" An amateur detective races to solve a decades-old murder mystery in this "bloody and bizarre" Japanese crime novel with a twist hailed as "one of the most original" ( Daily Mail ). Astrologer, fortune teller, and self-styled detective Kiyoshi Mitarai must solve a macabre murder mystery that has baffled Japan for 40 years--in just one week. With the help of his freelance illustrator friend, Kiyoshi sets out to answer the questions that have haunted the country ever since: Who murdered the artist Umezawa, raped and killed his daughter, and then chopped up the bodies of six others to create Azoth, 'the perfect woman'? With maps, charts, and other illustrations, this story of magic and illusion--pieced together like a great stage tragedy--challenges the reader to unravel the mystery before the final curtain falls. This quintessential Japanese "logic mystery"--eerie, gory, and intriguing--combines the puzzle-solving of Golden Age Western detective fiction with elements of shocking horror and dark humor.

The book I bought was reasonably priced and when it arrived it was in the 'Like New' condition specified in the listing. However, when I saw that the seller had not shipped the book after more than 15 days had passed since my order I felt I must write to say that I had actually placed an order with the seller and inquire when it planned to send the book. The brusque reply was that a tracking number was available, but no number HAD been created until I pointed out that I had placed the order.

    • Great Puzzler for those who enjoy "locked-room" mysteries!!!

Brilliant 'locked-room" mystery -- "ala" the Golden Age of Crime Fiction. Shades of John Dickson Carr and Ellery Queen. Maybe without the flavor of the 1930s or 1940s but probably one of the most ingenious "puzzles" I have ever read. It may be a little off-putting, since there is little atmosphere, but the mystery is so compelling and the solution so marvelous and original -- I rate this next to Carr's "Three Coffins" and "Crooked Hinge" as one of the greatest puzzlers in all of detective fiction....
