Synopsis
Containing detailed and informative descriptions of mid-19th century American life and landscape, this book provides a revealing social history of a time now thankfully passed, with horrifying descriptions of the condition of slaves and the cruelties of the slave trade in states from Florida to Virginia., While Liberal MP for Sheffield from 1832-1837, James Silk Buckingham campaigned energetically for social reform. After his retirement from Parliament he transferred his reforming zeal to the issue of slavery. His two-volume Journey Through the Slave States was the result of a lecture trip to the southern states of North America which he used to gain ammunition for his campaign. Although he concentrates on providing horrifying descriptions of the condition of slaves and the cruelties of the slave trade in states from Florida to Virginia, Buckingham also provides numerous entertaining anecdotes of the people he meets on his journey, the places he stays and the countryside through which he travelled. Containing detailed and informative descriptions of mid-19th century American life and landscape, this book provides an invaluable social history of a time now thankfully passed.
