Sugestión, negocios, milagros, charlatanería... Numerosas fueron y son las explicaciones para afirmar o negar semejante fenómeno, y condenar o venerar a sus hacedores. Las curaciones llevadas a cabo por algunos sacerdotes católicos, registradas desde hace siglos, han pesado a la hora de su canonización, pero la Iglesia Católica prefiere no ser muy efusiva al mencionar otras, más numerosas aun que las "oficiales". Mauro E. Lombardi da cuenta aquí de algunos de esos "curas sanadores", como el legendario "Pío de Pietrelcina, en Italia, o el padre Mario Pantaleo, en Argentina; el colombiano Alfonso Uribe Jaramillo y el estadonudense, venerado en México, Thomas Mitchell, por solo mencional algunos. Pero también menciona a los laicos consultados por personalidades de todo el mundo, y a los probados simuladores y mentirosos, algunos de los cuales gozan de notoriedad.
