    vivitar 285

    a good looking old flash, it does work well on the auto preset power levels. however, the manual modes of full, half, quarter and one sixteenth power do not work as all these settings dump full power. I will be using this flash as a bounce flash with the yellow and red settings, which will still be quite useful, and good enough for a $22 flash.

    This flashes are so good I have use them for over 30 years!

    I was so sorry and mad when Vivitar discontinue this units, it is one of the best flashes that I ever use. The power is enormous and very, I mean, very easy to use. I teach photography and have for the last 25 years. In my Studio Lighting class at Truman College in Chicago, I teach my students how to create amazing photos using one, two or three of these units in a stand and umbrella or soft boxes. I have to teach them how to create excellent photos without going out and spend 10,000 dollars in lighting equipment. I prefer these over any TTL flash hands down. Not only do you get constant and great output the recycle time is great, specially is you use external batteries like the Quantum Batteries.     Vivitar 285HV flash

    I LOVE this little power-packed tool. Of course, it must be used with remote triggers and is 100% manual. But if the shoot is relatively controlled, no worries about needing automatic. The light is consistent and lovely when put through modifiers of any sort. Essential for serious photographer's tool box!

    It is in great shape.

    The flash operates well. It seems to still have its full power. Occasionally with an older flash it won't quite light things up like it did when it was new. This flash doesn't appear to have been overworked. That may change now that it's in our hands. Even the power cord attaches solidly; that seems to be the first failure with these old Vivitars, unless the foot itself breaks first.
