      Tech FXs are dated, but still good flick

      It's difficult to say something is really good, bad, or otherwise since it's my personal opinion. But that's a review, right? Anyway, I find this movie rather entertaining and is one I can still enjoy watching from time to time. The plot is well thought out, what with a scientist/programmer creating a virtual civilization where the characters created a virtual civilization on its own. The second virtual civilization was set in downtown Los Angeles in 1937. The FX are good, very good considering the movie came out in 1999. I consider it one of those 'sleepers' since it came and went from the theatres fairly quick. If you like a sci-fi set in modern future and past times, you should like 'The Thirteenth Floor'.

      Technology versus reality

      Technology and reality collide in murder and madness. Scientists can transfer a person's consciousness to a computer like a video game. The creator finds a problem and ends up dead. The story is very good and jumps back and forth from present day to 1937 Los Angeles. The special effects are amazing. If you like Blade Runner and the Matrix you'll like this movie.

      a great sci-fi murder mystery with many plot twist

      I loved this movie when I first saw it. Incredible art direction and re-creation of Los Angeles in the 1930s. I already had a copy, and bought this one to share with some friends, as nobody I know seems to have seen this movie. Even more interesting as this was made before the current wave of Virtual Reality equipment. Don't overlook the bonus materials!!!

      Better than The Matrix, IMHO

      This movie and Dark City are two of the most underrated and awesome sci-fi films ever. I actually like The Thirteenth Floor better than The Matrix. For me The Matrix was based on a great concept but that concept got overshadowed by all the glitzy special effects, explosions, gratuitous "Hollywood" style action scenes, etc. The Thirteenth Floor has terrific special effects, awesome cinematography, good acting and nothing overshadows the basic concept behind the idea of a digitally simulated reality.

      A great sci-fi film!

      This is one of my favorite sci-fi films. Together with DARK CITY, I never grow tired of it. Something that I can say only about a handful of films. A very original & entertaining story!
