10. Kabul-Jalalabad Highway, Afghanistan
What’s more dangerous than driving through mountain passes? Driving through Taliban territory of course! Combining this with hairpin turns and unthinkable falls, only the bold and brave would dare venture here.

9. Halsema Highway, Philippines
The highest altitude highway in the Philippines, and over 150km in length, this is not a highway to be scoffed at. With a lack of decent maintenance, and an incredibly slippery surface when the rain season comes around, it’s full of hazards at every turn. It may look pretty, but don’t be deceived.

8. Amalfi Coast, Italy
We had the displeasure of cruising along this road, and believe us, it is not one for those who suffer from vertigo. The picturesque scenery was certainly stunning, but we feared for our lives for the majority of the trip.
7. Needle’s Eye, South Dakota Highway
A 14 mile stretch along the South Dakota Highway, it’s called Needle’s Eye for a reason. Although catering for almost exclusively sightseers these days, that doesn’t take anything away from the sheer granite tunnels that vehicles are required to squeeze through.

6. Stelvio Pass, Italy
The highest paved mountain pass in the Eastern Alps, and made famous by the Top Gear team on their search for the “greatest driving road in the world”. Great it may be, but it also appears incredibly dangerous. It’s also famed for it’s use by cyclists and a range of different races, including the Giro d’Italia.

5. Sichuan-Tibet Highway, China
Lined with countless yaks and Tibetan homes, this route is sure to be a mind-blowing trip. A 2140km trip, the landscape changes dramatically, from peak to open land.

4. Ruta 5, Chile
Known locally as Ruta 5, it is 2090 miles long. It’s not so much the drop that’s the issue here, it’s the wind. Alongside a host of drivers speeding due to monotony and relying on the fact the road is usually empty. Not a great mix, to say the least.

3. James Dalton Highway, Alaska
One of the most isolated routes in the United States, with a mere 3 towns along it’s long route. It also has a scary statistic in that 1 of 50 motorcyclists who travel along this highway will crash. And your nearest medical facilities are going to be a long way away. In other words, stay away.

2. Guoliang Tunnel Road, China
The tunnel itself is 15 feet high and 12 feet wide, allowing modern vehicles to edge through the mountain. The lovely windows carved into the side allow you to gaze upon the possibility of tumbling to an almost certain death below, which is nice.

1. La Carretera de los Yungas (The Death Road), Bolivia
It’s safe to say, this road gained the name “Death Road” for a reason. 200 to 300 travelers are apparently killed a year, and has ominous marking of where vehicles have fallen to their doom. I can’t think of something worse to see alongside such a perilous trip. It’s popular among thrillseekers and mountain bikers, yet 18 cyclists have died since 1998.
