At the height of the muscle car wars in 1967, a Firebird Sprint like this one available on eBay really stood out.
Most other performance cars of the day relied on big, honking V-8 engines under the hood for performance. But the Firebird Sprint did the job with a high-tech, six-cylinder overhead cam engine.
The Sprint was conceived by none other than John DeLorean, who was then head of Pontiac. DeLorean wanted a domestic model that could run with European sports cars. So the Sprint was set up for handling and all-around performance rather than just straight-line acceleration.
It was equipped from the factory with wider tires, a limited-slip differential, and heavy-duty suspension. The model was praised at the time for its handling agility and better weight distribution thanks to a lighter engine.
Stock and Unmodified
The Sprint available now on eBay still has its original high compression 215-horsepower, 4.1-liter OHC six and four-barrel carburetor, backed by a four-speed manual transmission. This car is one of just over 1,100 convertibles made during the 1967 model year—making this an especially rare example. Very few are still on the road.
Many Sprints were converted to V-8 power over the years, and others have succumbed to time and hard use at the hands of enthusiastic owners.
This Firebird is a well-cared-for and largely original example. It went through a light restoration at some point and still maintains a stock and unmodified appearance inside and out.
The beautiful Tyrol blue paint presents very well. All the chrome and stainless trim is in place and shines like new, including the original and nearly impossible-to-find “Overhead Cam” badging on the hood and OHC 6 rocker panel badging. In addition, the lighter blue convertible top is in excellent working condition.
Blue on Blue
The Sprint’s list of desirable features include:
- Pontiac Rally ll wheels with chrome trim rings
- Newer radial tires with period-correct raised white letters
- An original and functioning hood-mounted tachometer
The matching blue interior appears spotless, with no visible rips or flaws in the seats, carpets, or door panels. The Sprint sports a wood steering wheel and matching appliqué on the dash. And all gauges and controls work as they should.
Under the hood, the engine compartment is clean and orderly, showcasing the OHC engine and original badged valve cover. A chrome air cleaner and oil filler cap dress things up a bit.
The trunk is as clean as the rest of the car, with what appears to be an original trunk mat and a matching blue convertible to boot.
This desirable 1967 convertible is listed for $40,000. That’s entirely reasonable considering that it’s one of the scarcest Firebird models. Best of all, it needs nothing and is ready to drive or show.
