Morris Garages or MG was a producer of some wonderful sports cars throughout the years. The T series, the A series, and the B series, and of the course the Midgets are some of the most popular models produced by MG. Today we will be looking at a variant of the MGB a model that was introduced in 1962 and lasted until 1980.

While anyone could go out and buy the modern day equivalent of an MG in the form of a Mazda Miata, or even a used Honda S2000, there is obviously a significant difference between the modern day equivalents of the British sports cars and the genuine articles. The modern cars lack a certain soul to them; they lack the smell of burning or leaking oil, or gasoline. Sure they might be more reliable, but do they have the class of a chrome bumper or even a rubber bumper MGB on wire wheels such as this one? We’d argue that they don’t and that the British sports cars of yesteryear from makes like Austin Healey, Triumph, MG, Lotus, and so many others had a certain charm that is hard to replicate.

Even the very best Japanese carmakers like Mazda, Honda, Toyota or Nissan couldn’t quite replicate that British charm that is so hard to quantify. Even with all the reliability that we’ve come to expect from the Japanese automakers, something is missing; call it certain cheekiness, that distinct British quality or soul. There is just something that no modern day car could compete with a classic for, and often that is a place in many a car enthusiast’s heart.

Why was the MGB such a big hit worldwide? It is hard to say exactly. It might have been the lower starting prices, or the size of the car, which was larger than some smaller competitors yet still nimble enough to feel sporty. But, the MGB, and its variants, sold like hotcakes from the introduction of the car in the early 1960’s into 1970’s, and many are still around today with the aide of the MG owners clubs worldwide.
