A 2001 Harley-Davidson Dyna Customized for More Power

Motorcycles  /   /  By Savannah Rose

Harley-Davidson discontinued the Dyna line in 2017. But Dyna bikes are still very popular because they strike a great balance. They’re sporty—but not as small as a Sportster—and their skinny profile provides an alternative to touring models.

The Dyna recently offered on eBay reveals how the model can be customized with great results. The 2001 bike only had 4,200 miles of use when the restoration began in 2015. The builder had specific goals in mind: more horsepower, torque, and style.

Every Nut, Bolt and Clip

The 2001 FXDXT T-Sport, a popular variant, is the foundation. The builder replaced every nut, bolt, and clip over more than two years.

The FXDXT now features these components:

The S&S Cycle Black Edition engine boasts about 116 horsepower and 123 pound-feet of torque. Those are the specs when it comes stock. But this engine was tuned by Hiro Koiso in Las Vegas to boost output to 127 horses.

The bike looks and sounds impressive, thanks to the Thunderhead exhaust. It’s now a throaty rumble instead of the quiet stock exhaust. S&S’s T111 is a highly revered TC-style engine, sharing many H-D Twin Cam engine characteristics. But it has much tighter tolerances than a stock engine.

The T111 is a square engine, meaning that the bore and stroke match—resulting in less vibration and less strain. Both the bore and stroke are 4⅛, at 9.8:1 compression. They have S&S 585 gear drive and Easy Start cams with an S&S TC3 cam plate. The Rivera Pro Clutch helps transfer that power to the ground. That’s a popular upgrade for these bikes.

Maintaining the Original Vibe

The seller maintained a lot of the original T-Sport parts on this bike. The front end is stock length. Added stability comes courtesy of OEM T-sport with Race Tech springs and Gold valve emulators—and a fork brace from San Diego Customs. In the back, a Metamechex Aluminum swingarm, powder-coated gloss black, attaches by way of two 12.5-inch piggyback shocks from Fox Suspension.

For stopping power, Brembo rotors and brake calipers replace the stock braking system in both front and rear. A Drag Specialties sprocket attaches the 520 chain to the rear wheel.

Sharp Looks to Match the Power

The OEM T-Sport fairing is an attention-getter, starting with the Altered Industries 16-inch windshield. The tins resting behind the fairing are all stock Harley-Davidson, but Valley Kustoms’ Paint Shop slathered them in an incredible “Pearl Lamborghini Grigio Telesto” shade of gray, with pinstriping like the original T-Sport style. Most of the black parts have been re-powder-coated in gloss black by Snail Motorsports out of Las Vegas, Nev.

The rider’s view is also upgraded. The handlebars were replaced with Lucky Dave’s bars, resting atop Bung King’s 10-inch risers. Grips from Performance Machine accent the ISR black anodized billet controls. Even the foot controls were upgraded, with new parts from Hammerhead Designs.

Pegs from Thrashin’ Supply give a good grip for the rider, while Boosted Brad’s passenger pegs allow passengers to rest their feet. A “The Wall” seat from BMC is a comfortable place to sit and provides plenty of support so the rider won’t slide back as they twist the throttle. T-Sport bags finishes the vibe on the clean, powerful Harley-Davidson Dyna.
