A Preserved Example of Honda’s 1100XX Blackbird Speed Machine

When the Honda CBR 1100XX Blackbird was introduced in 1996, it was the fastest thing on two wheels. Even when dethroned, the Japanese bike retained its reputation as the most usable and refined mega-tourer. Decades later, its design still looks fresh.

This one currently for sale on eBay might be the best example in the world.

For Sale by Its Original Owner

The seller, experienced Illinois-based eBay vendor brianmtite, describes himself as a Honda guy. When the new Honda CBR 1100XX Blackbird was introduced 27 years ago, Brian purchased this very machine in the eBay listing. Since then, its wheels have rolled slightly under 3,300 miles.

3,287 miles on the odometer

Brian explains:

It might be the most correct and pristine Blackbird in the US. It’s been stored in a temperature-controlled environment all this time, and I have all the original paperwork and receipts.

The only flaws are tiny scratches in the centerstand’s feet. With a bit of paint, this machine could be in a museum.

Brian says:

I’ve only been to the grocery store on it lately, and I’ve been contemplating selling it for a while.

Sensible Craziness

Kawasaki led the motorcycle world into the 1990s with its legendary ZZR 1100. Suddenly, bikers had refinement and comfort to go along with superbike performance. Honda responded with the CBR 1100XX Blackbird, which promptly earned a Guinness World Record for top speed by reaching 178.5 miles per hour.

The Blackbird’s peak 164 horsepower shattered the competition. But the headline was how Honda engineers blended raw power with refinement, build quality, and handling. Reviewers were enraptured.

Honda’s extraordinary motorcycle remained in high demand even after Suzuki (and then Kawasaki) took turns heading the top-speed charts by echoing the ethos of the Blackbird. A little more power and slightly enhanced aerodynamics made all the difference.
