A Sleeker, More Stylish Thunderbird Sets the Pace for the Sixties

eBay Listing: 1961 Ford Thunderbird Convertible

A 1961 Ford Thunderbird has a look that defined a time in America. A period when the space race was in full swing, the Berlin Wall built by East Germany further entrenched the cold war, and the Kennedy Administration initiated a change through a young and energetic White House staff; a chapter in history when there was both tension and optimism in the air. That was also a time when the big three car companies could still be innovative, with much less established automotive history behind them. And it was a time before many automotive geniuses got rolling, when seemingly anything was possible, probable, and the great expectations of many drove right into our lives.

1961 Ford Thunderbird

Today it is rare when you stop and stare at a car the same way people must have stared at this T-bird in 1961. Even today certain Thunderbirds like this one look timeless from any angle, and sometimes all it takes is just one look to fall in love from just one angle. Ford Thunderbirds came in so many varieties over the years that it is hard to pinpoint which Thunderbird is most iconic. Most people would point to the first generation (1955-1957) models in their pastel or vibrant hues with tailfins or porthole windows – much like the 1956 model in American Graffiti. We can completely understand the appeal.

That being said we thought it would be a bit cliché to choose a first generation Thunderbird, which has been written about, and talked about to no end. Of the 73,051 Thunderbirds built in 1961, this one has a lot going for it. The 1961-1963 third generation models were a big hit for the Thunderbird nameplate and had evolved into much sleeker styling than its predecessors. 1961 models were the beginning of the third generation of the T-bird , served as a pace car for the Indianapolis 500, and conspicuously used as a parade vehicle for JFK’s inauguration. Call us crazy, but this car speaks to our souls for its clean look, its originality, and its great representation, not to mention its history and timeless styling.

The Keith Martin Collector Car Price Tracker reflects a high price for a 1961 Ford Thunderbird of $22,834, and a low price of $8,518. Perhaps an exceptional example would fetch more than that, as the classic vehicle market can fluctuate with new auction results coming out every day.
