Mega-Horsepower Classic Mustang Built to Celebrate 50 Years of the Pony Car

The impact of the Ford Mustang on American car culture is undeniable. As the Ford Mustang turns five decades old, a beast of a Pony Car from RK Motors helps to celebrate the occasion.

RK Motors unveiled a beastly classic Mustang to make the date as memorable (well, almost) as it was 50 years ago. As celebrations large and small happened in honor of the car, this was one for the power junkies.

Performance Paired with Perfection

This awesome creation by RK Motors is built around a 1967 GT500, but much of it has been heavily modified. It may look like it just rolled off the lot, but underneath the perfectly prepped paint is a monster.

Take the two hood pins off and you’ll discover the real beauty to this beast. The heart of this mega-pony is a hand built V8 Boss Nine with 527 cubic inches.

Carefully crafted, the engine has:

  • Fast XFI ECU port fuel injection
  • Custom ground camshaft
  • Forged aluminum positions
  • Roller rocker valvetrain
  • 1,500 CFM throttle body
  • Custom exhaust headers
  • 3-inch exhaust with Magnaflow mufflers

This all aluminum powerhouse puts out about 800 horsepower and is backed by a beefed up T56 six-speed manual transmission. The one-off Tremec was built by D&D Transmission and feeds into a Ford 9-inch rear with 3.55 gears and cone locker differential. Once the power makes it to the pavement, it does so through vintage-styled 18-inch wheels and BF Goodrich G-force Sport Comp tires.

The pony is also full of modern suspension parts to help it carve the curves. A custom frame by Detroit Speed stiffens the unibody. Front and rear coil-overs replace the Mustang’s long gone leaf springs.

For added stopping power, the brake system has been upgraded with Baer six-piston calipers that clamp down on 14-inch drilled and slotted front rotors and 13-inch rears.

Show and Go

Don’t let the shiny paint and fresh tires fool you, this is no trailer queen. This beast is made to handle like a go-kart and is set to roll in an upcoming event. It will be driven by RK Motors’ owner and chairman, Rob Kauffman, at the Hot Rod Power Tour — a 1,500 mile expedition from Charlotte, NC to Wisconsin. This endurance competition will have little need for so much horsepower, but who’s complaining?

This awesome example is the epitome of resto-mod at its best. It has all of the key high-end restoration characteristics with modern goodies to make it the best of all worlds.
