Ford pays homage to the 50th anniversary of its iconic Mustang by displaying the all-new 2015 Mustang convertible in Triple Yellow on top of the Empire State Building, April 16, in New York City. How was this feat done? Well – piece by piece, of course.
Dave Pericak, Mustang chief engineer commented, “We’ve taken the new Mustang to new heights of technology and refinement, so we decided to take it to new heights literally for this celebration.”
It took six weeks of preparation to bring the Mustang to the top of the Empire State Building, that is, 1,000 feet above the streets of Manhattan. Turns out, the observation deck is too high for a portable street crane and too narrow for helicopter delivery.
The car that ultimately made the trip to New York was completely stripped down and the surface cleaned up to make sure everything looked perfect before it was sectioned, painted, and placed in custom built wooden crates bound for the Big Apple.
“The observation deck is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m., leaving our crew of six with only a six-hour window to get everything out onto the deck and get the car assembled,” said Pericak. “Before we shipped the crates to New York, the crew spent several days practicing the entire assembly process – timing everything down to the minute – much like a NASCAR or Formula One pit crew.”
An exciting anniversary concept, we, along with many enthusiasts, waited patiently to get a glimpse of the showpiece car. Was it worth it? Absolutely. See for yourself.
