This 1955 VW Bus, now listed on eBay, originally came from the factory as a Kombi. The literal translation is combination, and usually refers to the mixed use of the model for commercial purposes and as a passenger vehicle—by quick removal of the rear seats. It features three windows on the sides, and one in the rear. The Standard version usually came in a two-tone paint scheme, as this one does.
This model has a larger rear engine compartment, with access from the classic “barn door.” Later buses had smaller engine lids.
The 1955 Volkswagen Type II Bus is a rare gem—given that only 3,189 were sold in the U.S. It survived more 60 years without rusting into oblivion or being crushed into a cube of steel.
The period-correct engine under the barn door is a 1,192 CC unit, developing a 36 horsepower. That’s obviously modest, but what’s impressive is the impeccable stylish upgrade. Accessories include a fresh air scoop in the front; deluxe aluminum trim all around the belt line; correct 1955 stamped 16″ wheels with chromed hub caps; ambulance overhead fresh air fans; and a period barn door steering wheel with a Wolfsburg castle horn button.
This model has a vintage appearance, harkening back to when it was produced on January 19, 1955 in Wolfsburg, Germany. It was purchased in Hollywood, Calif., nearly a year later, on December 24, 1955. It passed hands to its second owner a decade later—and then again in in 1994 when its current owner began restoration. Check out more details and photos on the eBay listing.
