In a world of big, single-cylinder off-road bikes, KTM made the 950 Super Enduro R, an even bigger twin-cylinder machine with genuine on-road capability. Riders loved it, and one is recently for sale on eBay.

Heavyweight Off-Roader

Seller Adrian Galambosi, who runs a paintless dent repair business in Loveland, Colo., concedes in the listing that he hasn’t ridden this bike a great deal. But his experience of and love for the brand go back a long way:

Oh, I grew up on KTMs. For me they have more soul than other bikes. They talk to you. Plus, I am originally from Hungary, and KTMs were made next door in Austria.

After acquiring the KTM though, he found himself drawn to Harley-Davidson and the concept of cruising in comfort. Which explained the KTM 950 Super Enduro R’s sale:

To be honest, I’ve cut back on riding in general at 52, apart from the occasional trip on one of my Harleys. But I’ve always loved these bikes. They’re great on back roads, and the handling and power are very, very good. This is a real heavyweight off-roader.

Enhanced

This KTM 950 Super Enduro R came from the factory with premium parts like WP suspension, Brembo four-piston brakes, Brembo-Marchesini wheels and USD forks. Further enhancements include Akrapovic silencers, an Oberon clutch cylinder, heated grips, and genuine KTM front and rear bags.

While mileage is on the high side at 29,000, we’re assured that the maintenance record is up to date. The previous owner, who enjoyed the bike for 12 years, cherished this machine. Certainly the photos seem to back this up.

Nothing Else Like it

Reviewers at Visordown magazine called the 2007 KTM 950 Super Enduro R,

The motorcycling equivalent of a man with a thousand-yard stare, disturbing twitch, and a worrying interest in firearms….

Such was its departure from the usual on/off road Supermoto world.

Having decided that you can only do so much with a single-cylinder motor, the Austrian firm elected to fit its thumping 942-cc V-twin in a frame where a 500-cc single-cylinder engine would usually be plenty. A dry weight of just over 400 pounds, a short wheelbase, and a shattering 70 pound-feet of peak torque make for a very lively and capable machine. It’s as happy on its rear wheel as it is on both and capable of hanging with sport bikes on the tighter roads as well as blazing a trail over the bumpy stuff.

The 950 Super Enduro R was a big gamble by KTM. On paper the concept looked like the plans of a madman. But the bike was a smash hit and earned it a reputation as a builder of fine road-going machinery. Unlike previous 500-cc single-cylinder machines, the 950 was far more than just a Sunday morning toy. It could eat miles with aplomb. If you need a dual-purpose machine of this type, there’s really nothing else like it.
