While the 1962 Austin Mini Super now listed on eBay is unrestored, its adorable and iconic stature size still shines through. The red and black Mini was discovered near Portland, Ore., where it was parked 1972—with only 30,343 miles on the odometer. Documentation shows that it was built in February 1962, factory-ordered by the original owner, and promptly shipped to Portland, where it stayed in the same family for decades.
When the classic Mini launched in 1959, it was designed to be inexpensive and fuel-efficient, but with enough room for four adults. That basic formula was a hit, which encouraged the company to build models with more power and frills.
In 1961, Mini created the “Super” version, with stylistic flourishes like bumpers with corner bars, full wheel covers, duo-tone paint work, and a fancier interior sporting a triple instrument fascia. The Super quickly gave way to the “Cooper,” which bumped up the engine size from 850cc to 997cc for a little more oomph.
The body shell of the listed car, according to the seller, is rust-free, although all the mechanics will need a thorough review.
Only about 175 example so the Super variant, in right-hand drive, were built. The 1962 Mini now listed on eBay could be the only surviving example on this side of the pond.
