Original ’69 Mustang Mach 1 Has the Right Enhancements

American  /   /  By Jim Travers

Few classic cars are as instantly recognizable as the Ford Mustang. The high-performance Mach 1, which joined the Ford lineup in 1969, has become one of the most sought-after Mustang models. The first-year Mustang Mach 1 recently for sale on eBay is an excellent example. It’s mostly original with a few modern upgrades for everyday drivability.

It’s a Driver

This Mustang Mach 1 is finished in its original Gulfstream Aqua with a contrasting black hood, Mach 1 side stripes, and a black vinyl interior. Its excellent condition reflects the remarkably low odometer reading of less than 40,000 miles. It has no signs of rust or other damage.

The seller describes this Mustang Mach 1 as a driver rather than a show car. However, detailed photos show a car that’s ready to go and show. All trim and badging are in place.

Inside, the original high-back black bucket seats show minimal wear and no tears. The center console, door panels, and dashboard are also well-preserved. The original Mach 1 oversized rally clock remains in front of the front passenger. Carpeted floor mats protect the full carpeting, which is in excellent condition.

Tasteful Upgrades

The Mustang Mach 1’s original 351-cubic-inch V-8 combines lively performance, decent fuel economy, and everyday reliability. The original automatic transmission was replaced with a T5 five-speed manual for a more engaging driving experience. It’s controlled by a period-correct wood shift knob and a brand-new clutch. The conversion is convincing enough to make it look like the car came that way.

The underside of this Florida Mustang Mach 1 is just as clean and well-preserved. Its corrosion-free condition backs up its low mileage and time spent in a warm climate.

Several tasteful upgrades add increased drivability, comfort, and performance:

Worth the Money?

When it arrived in 1969, the Mach 1 brought Mustang performance to a new level, adding a lot of extra value. There were numerous performance, convenience, and cosmetic upgrades. In addition to a choice of potent V-8 engines, these included an upgraded suspension and brakes for better handling, a nine-inch rear end, styled steel wheels, spoilers front and rear, hood pins, and an enhanced interior.

This example adds even more appeal, with desirable options like power steering, power disc brakes, and air conditioning. It’s all detailed in the included Marti Report.

This 1969 Mustang Mach 1 has a Buy-It-Now price of $69,995. That sounds lofty, but its price is in line with the current market. Few other examples will be as well-kept and original as this low-mileage car.
